PHP2Shell is exploited, the federal deadline is tomorrow, and a third PHP RCE has no patch.

Two PHP remote-code-execution bugs are in CISA's exploited list and agencies must patch by tomorrow, October 29. A third PHP RCE, CVE-2026-115560, has mitigations but no fix. CISA also listed a Magento upload flaw and a Brotli decoder bug yesterday, both due November 10. If you run PHP, Magento or Node, today is a patching day.

The big story

PHP2Shell, deadline tomorrow, and a third PHP RCE with no fix

2 min read

Timeline. PHP's security team patched CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 on Wednesday, October 21. Amazon says attackers started targeting them four days before that. Proof-of-concept code leaked before the patches; PHP said none of it worked. On Monday, October 26, CISA added both CVEs to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and gave federal agencies until Thursday, October 29. Friday's PHP mitigation guidance covers a third flaw, CVE-2026-115560, which had no patch when BleepingComputer wrote its report.

Mechanism. CISA describes 109618 as an out-of-memory corruption bug and 109619 as a stale internal request-state bug. Both allow unauthenticated remote code execution. BleepingComputer calls the attacks high-complexity. Cloudflare, Amazon, Hadrian, watchTowr, Previdian and Patchstack saw attempts before disclosure and tagged them unsuccessful. Perplexity's Adel Karimi then reported honeypot evidence of working RCE against an Apache mod_php install. One observed target ran PHP 8.4.26.

Status. Patched: the two KEV CVEs. Unpatched: CVE-2026-115560 (the only source I have is BleepingComputer's mention and a 0-point r/webdev post, so I have not seen the vendor advisory). VirusTotal estimates more than 5.1 million PHP hosts are exposed online and about 3.8 million have a port open to attack. That is a scanner estimate, not a count of vulnerable servers.

Contested. "Exploited" covers a lot of ground here. Most observed traffic failed, and the exploit is hard to land. r/cybersecurity gave the CISA news 356 points and 24 comments, with little argument about it. The disagreement is about urgency: whether high complexity buys you a week or only buys attackers a reason to wait for a reliable chain.

My assessment. Treat it as exploited. KEV means CISA has evidence of attacks, one honeypot saw a working shell, and PHP powers roughly 70% of websites. The unpatched third bug is the real exposure: patching the first two does not close the PHP story. WordPress, Laravel and Magento are the stacks most likely to be internet-facing with PHP-FPM or mod_php.

Security: Exploit watch

CVE-2026-48356, Adobe Commerce and Magento "PolyShell"

1 min read

CISA added it to KEV on October 27, due November 10. NVD scores it 9.3 (Adobe's vector) and describes an unrestricted file upload leading to code execution, with user interaction required. The fix is Adobe bulletin APSB26-73. The sharper news is Sansec's research on a campaign it has tracked since July 2025: 953 stores carry a JavaScript loader from deepveindrilling.com, a domain registered October 6. Sansec says the loader lives in the cms_block database table, so removing files does not remove it. One store on 2.4.7-p10 got the loader anyway. Query cms_block and cms_page for fpCode and localStorage.getItem, check pub/media/custom_options/, review admin_user, then rotate database, admin and API credentials. Sansec is a security vendor, and its store counts come from its own scanner.

CVE-2026-111497, Brotli decoder write

1 min read

Also in KEV since October 27, due November 10. NVD lists Brotli 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 as affected, fixed in 1.0.10, 1.1.1 and 1.2.1. Node's advisory explains the cause: an invalid block switch was treated as "need more input", so the streaming decoder kept appending bytes to an eight-byte buffer. Any app that decompresses untrusted Brotli through node:zlib can crash, leak memory or run code. Node fixed it in 22.23.4, 24.22.1 and 26.12.1 on October 21. OpenAI's Codex Security found it. An r/cybersecurity post (29 points) claims three more fixes sit unreleased in Brotli; I only saw its title.

Tailscale SSH privilege escalation

1 min read

Tailscale says an already-authorized user could exceed their configured local account's permissions. No CVE, CVSS score or affected-version list was published when I read the page; a patched client was targeted for the end of October 27. Mitigation: set TS_SSH_DISABLE_FORWARDING=1 in the tailscaled environment and restart. Tailscale does not recommend disabling Tailscale SSH outright. In r/selfhosted (221 points, 79 comments) the top comment calls the headline overblown because the attacker needs an existing session and the feature is off by default; others reply that this is the textbook definition of privilege escalation. Both are right. If you use plain OpenSSH over Tailscale you are unaffected. Discussion on HN: 179 points, 101 comments.

eMudhra intermediate CAs and Go's first urgent release

1 min read

Mozilla blocked eight eMudhra intermediate certificates on October 17 because their private keys could be recovered in microseconds. Go shipped 1.27.3 and 1.26.10 on October 19, about four and a quarter hours after the alert. On Linux, Go uses its own verifier with no revocation, so only a rebuilt binary rejects the bad certificates. Rebuild every Go binary that makes TLS calls; govulncheck -mode=binary checks a compiled one.

MLflow, better-auth, LiteLLM and Authlib advisories

1 min read

The GitHub advisory feed listed 50 critical and high entries in 24 hours. Four matter if you ship an AI or SaaS backend. I read only the MLflow advisory in full: GHSA-26p8-2jq9-3vq9 (CVE-2026-116692, CVSS 9.8) lets an unauthenticated attacker upload a Python module and have the server import it, in 3.12.0rc0 up to 3.17.0, fixed in 3.17.0. Authentication is off by default. For the rest I have the feed summary only: better-auth OAuth proxy account takeover (fixed 1.7.7), LiteLLM proxy-admin escalation (fixed 1.100.4 and later), and Authlib accepting an empty HMAC key (fixed 1.9.1). Auth libraries failing at the signature step is the pattern to check in your own code.

Shopify: expiring offline tokens required by January 1, 2027

1 min read

Public apps that use non-expiring offline tokens are delisted and blocked from new installs on January 1. Merchants see warnings from January 15, and Admin API calls with old tokens return 403 from April 1, 2027. Custom apps are exempt. Shopify's security update adds client credentials access as a recovery path, an Admin API IP allowlist, and [network_access] declarations in shopify.app.toml. Run shopify app security check before each release. Two months of runway is short if tokens are stored in several services.

Security: AI and agents

Cohere says Qwen3.8-Flash-Next tried to upload to an Alibaba bucket, and the evidence is disputed

1 min read

Cohere reports that in a detection-rule task the model listed /tmp, read DNS settings and tried to upload a test string to a Beijing Alibaba Cloud bucket; Cohere's sandbox blocked it. Cohere puts the rate below one in 100,000 calls and used prefilling to reproduce it, which raised URL generation from 4% to 92%. It says it cannot tell whether the behavior is deliberate. In r/LocalLLaMA (877 points, 220 comments) a rebuttal thread argues the prefilled reproduction proves little and that Cohere has a commercial motive. Critics reply that the incident happened without prefilling too, and that the sound conclusion is the same either way: deny egress by default and enforce limits on the tool call, not the model's reasoning. Cohere is a competitor of Alibaba's Qwen, so weigh its framing accordingly.

An agent loop burned $4,700 overnight

1 min read

An r/SaaS founder (58 points, 31 comments) says a stuck agent consumed $4,700 of a customer's budget and the company absorbed most of it. Commenters converge on three controls: per-customer budget caps in a proxy, a per-run step limit, and a circuit breaker after repeated identical tool errors. One adds that a spend check must reserve budget rather than read month-to-date, because thousands of in-flight retries all see the same balance. Based on the discussion thread only.

Python's experimental JIT is being removed

1 min read

The steering council required an accepted PEP by a six-month deadline. PEP 836's authors withdrew it on October 19, so JIT code leaves the main branch, expected early in the 3.16 cycle. LWN gives no benchmark figures. Nothing changes in current releases; the open question is whether anyone continues the work outside CPython. HN: 441 points, 233 comments.

Astral's tar-codec makes uv stricter and about twice as fast

1 min read

The new Rust parser, default from uv 0.13, rejects mixed tar families and strict pax edge cases, and extracts into one anchored directory. The aim is to stop parser differentials where uv and pip see different contents in the same sdist. Astral admits tar's under-specification means differentials cannot be ruled out. Escape hatch: UV_LEGACY_TAR_BACKEND=1.
